What did you learn doing your health project?

I learned that there are many calories in all the foods that we eat everyday. Some that include: rice, vegetables, nuts, etc. I learned that it isn't very easy to eat healthy, since I rarely eat much from the Food Pyramid. The 2 weeks were practically HELL to me, since I had to put some restrictions to my daily foods. I couldn't eat much sweets, chocolate, etc. I even threw in some ice-cream & ORGANIC chips so I could make through my 2 weeks. They didn't taste too great though.. especially the organic chips. It's quite hard staying healthy.. something I cannot be committed to, unless forced.

Part 3 - Phantoms In The Brain (Episode 1)

I find it amazing that a person that is blind can actually "see" and identify the directions of the movements. You don't really have to see something to identify it; you just have to be aware of it. Also, I learned we experience blind sights every now and then. In some patients, it's like the left side of the lobe doesn't exist. Also, they suffer from neglect for a few months. I don't think neglect is fascinating though...

Part 2 - Phantoms In The Brain (Episode 1) Part 3

I learned that Phantom Limbs hurt very much and that you can't relieve the pain. I feel sorry for those people, because there's no treatment for it, since you can't heal something that isn't there. The brain sends messages to the Phantom Limb that isn't there, which makes the person in a lot of pain. Also, I learned you can get Phantom Limbs in any part of the body, except the brain.

YouTube (Mirror Box and Phantom Limb Pain #1)

I thought that this YouTube was pretty interesting. I thought the Phantom Limb was pretty funny, because it's a nice way to trick people. I don't understand how it causes pain though.. or how it causes relief or emotional feelings though. I thought that was pretty weird. NOTE: It's important that you should remove all rings, watches, etc. before performing this activity though.

Write about Smell or Homonuclus Man

I think our sense, smell, is pretty amazing. Well. . I don't know about you, but I wouldn't know what to do if I couldn't smell anything. The world would be pretty dull, in my opinion. It's probably because I can identify any smells even from far far away. I'm pretty fascinated by this sense of mines. I mean .. without smell, we wouldn't even be able to taste the food that we eat, I don't think. Basically, I don't think I would be able to even survive without this 1 sense. But of course, the sense that is most important surely is always going to be sight. . . I think. hehe'

Chapter 2 Summarization

Chapter 2 basically talked about phantom limbs and stories that were related to that. A phantom limb is when the patient is not crazy, but he/she is given the impression that their missing body part is still there, even though they KNOW it's not. An example that was used was of a guy named Tom. Also, our lips and fingers are highly sensitive to touch, which is why Tom couldn't identify correctly where the scientist placed the Q-Tip on him. You can also do this activity using the technique magnetoencephalography, also known as MEG.

Story in Phantom That Has Intrigued Me The Most

The story that has intrigued me the most is the story that the schoolteacher suffered a stroke that was paralyzed on the left side of her body, but she insisted that it was not paralyzed. When she was asked whose arm was lying on the bed, she explained that the limb belonged to her brother. It is rather funny how these people are NOT crazy, but they sure do ACT crazy.

What Has Surprised Me In Phantoms

I was pretty surprised by the stories told. Especially the one about the person's wanted to scratch, wiggle, etc.. with his arm.. even though he knows that he lost his arm in a car accident. Also, it surprised me how his phantom pain disappeared when he was shown the "lost" arm that had been buried in the garden. It's also surprising how we try to train monkeys to do some human actions.

What I Learned Doing My Project

I learned that Prolactin is a peptide hormone primarily associated with lactation. It is synthesisted and secreted by lactotrope cells in the anterior pituary gland. It's also produced in other tissues including the breast and the decidua. Also, Prolactin has many effects, such as: to decrease normal levels of sex hormones and it delays hair regrowth in mice. There's little and big prolactin. Prolactin levels peak during REM sleep, and in the early morning. Levels can rise after exercise, meals, sexual intercourse, or minor surgical procedures

Mind Illusions

I learned that our lens is perfectly clear and curved. Also, a person with perfect eyesight is susceptible to optical illusions. Our perceptions are influenced by our past experiences, imagination, and association. Our nervous system approximates color, shape, and dimension. In the 3rd Website, I learned that: The receptors in your eye and the rest of your visual system evolved for you to see things that are useful to behaviour. You don’t just see what’s there, you make a ‘best guess’ based on statistical probabilities of what you have experienced before.

Sense I feel is stronger than the average person's

I feel that the sense that is stronger than the average person's is my ears. The reason for that is because I always tend to eavesdrop every now and then. People sometimes "use" me to listen to other people's gossip for them .. to see if they're talking behind their back. I try to refuse to do it, but they keep bugging me to do it for them. I know it's not a good thing to do, but sometimes I just can't help it. I just you could say it's because I'm nosy, as well as curious. I base this on ... my experiences, I guess. I usually can hear things very good from real far away. Needless to say, having good hearing can be a good and also a bad thing.

The Cancer That Frightens Me Most

Truthfully, I'm scared of every cancer there is. Even the word: cancer, sends shivers down my spine. But if I HAD to choose, the cancer that scares me the most is lung cancer. Why? Because here in the United States, so many people smoke. I myself do not smoke, but I'm the victim when it comes to the situation. Now only do they have to suffer the consequences later on, us victims have to too. It's really unfair how a healthy person is caused to end up having unhealthy lungs due to second-hand smoking. Therefore, the cancer that I'm most afraid of is lung cancer.

Have You Ever Been Short of Breath

I'm constantly short of breath, especially during passing periods. It's not really because I walk slow or lazily . . . I usually tend to have a hard time of getting on time to this class once in a while. It's because my 4th Period is on the D building / 2nd Floor... and sometimes she keeps us in a couple of minutes. Anyways, another time I've been out of breath was last year during badminton practice when running up + down the stairs, the push-ups, stretches, running around the school, etc.

My Goals For Physiology This Semester

This semester, I want to earn a better grade than I did last semester. Also, I want to get better test scores, because my test scores have always been extremely poor. Anyways, in order to get a decent grade, I should learn to manage my time more wisely. After learning to manage my time more wisely, I should be able to make some time to study for this class. I just find it extremely difficult to memorize all the names of the bones, tissues, etc. I don't know how the other people do it, but I guess I'll eventually have to figure out a way to do so .. if I want to earn a good grade. Also, I want to do all my work by not procrastinating as much or at all...

What I Enjoyed about 1st Semester

I enjoyed that we got to meet new people and also learn how to stay healthy. I really enjoyed reading the YOU book, because despite being interesting, it also teaches as well. Nothing really confuses me, except that many of the bone names are really similar. Also, it's really hard to memorize all the names of the bones, muscles, etc. in our body. I don't think we spent enough time on the YOU book, because we rarely read/discuss it. I would definitely improve by learning how to manage my time wisely and also try not to procrastinate. I want to have enough time to get decent scores on my quizzes/tests, instead of just trying to BS them. I hope I will do better next semester than this one, because I was a total failure this semester.

How Heart Healthy Are You

I'm not exactly too heart healthy, because I don't exercise as much as I used to anymore. The previous years, I used to exercise a lot ... everyday at badminton practices and also, in PE class. This year, however, I'm no longer taking P.E. and also I don't have time for badminton practices either. I regret for not joining this year, but I really cannot manage time for badminton. The reason is because I need to raise my grades up and I have so much more to do. Also, I don't exactly eat the healthiest foods either. I don't eat too much junk food, I just eat a lot of candy .. etc. I think I need to work out a bit when I manage to dig out some time soon.
